Serge Bernier comes from Granby, in the Cantons-de-l'Est, where he received his early education before attending the military colleges in Saint-Jean and in Kingston, at the Strasbourg University Centres for Higher European Studies, as well as at the University of Strasbourg. He is the author of Volume III of the series Canadian Military Heritage, 1872-2000 and The Royal 2e Régiment 1914-1999. In addition, he has co-authored three books on socio-military history, French Canadians and Bilingualism in the Canadian Armed Forces, in 2 volumes, The Memoirs of General Jean V. Allard, as well as publishing his doctoral thesis, in a totally different domain: Relations politiques franco-britanniques, 1947 to 1958. He served as editor for two major translations from English to French in the field of Canadian military history (Stanley, Nos Soldats, and Morton, Une histoire militaire du Canada). He is also the editor of several collections of texts and produced a number of major articles. His military career has included staff posts, professor at the Royal Military College in Kingston and historian at the Directorate of History & Heritage. Presently, he is the President of the Canadian Military History Commission, after having acted, as a volunteer, in several charitable and social professional organisations. In 1997, Dr. Bernier became the first Director of the Directorate of History and Heritage, at the Department of National Defence: he was a main player in the creation and the growth of this directorate. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2000) and Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (2003 – France). |
