COLONEL (Ret’d) ANGUS BROWN, OMM, CD, MA

 

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Colonel Angus Brown was raised and educated in Paris, Ontario. Enlisting in the Canadian Army in 1962, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Canadian Hussars in 1963, following which he served in Canada and Egypt until 1966 in both tank and reconnaissance squadrons.

After two years of instructional duty at the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School in Camp Borden, Angus returned to the 8th Canadian Hussars as a Captain, and served in a reconnaissance squadron and as Adjutant. His broad-ranging military career thereafter included postings as a squadron commander with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Lahr, West Germany in 1977-78, Executive Assistant to the Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel) at NDHQ during 1985-87, Commander of Canadian Forces Base Suffield, Alberta for three years until 1990, and an appointment as Director of Arms Control Verification in July 1995.

Angus completed the All-Arms Tactics Course at the British Army School of Infantry, the Canadian Forces Staff School, the Army Staff Course at Kingston, the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College at Toronto, and the Defence Resources Management Course at RMC. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and an MA in War Studies from the Royal Military College. In 1994, he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Military Merit.

Angus left the Canadian Forces in January, 1998. Since retirement, Angus Brown has been the editor of a defence magazine and has worked as a consultant in the Ottawa area, with contracts from several government departments in the areas of security and arms control. He has also acted as an historical consultant for tours of Canadian war sites in Europe.

Angus joined in the FCWM in1998 and was Director of Programs until 2004, when he assumed the position of Vice President. In 1999, he designed and now conducts the Canadian War Museum’s Oral History Program, as well as serving as President of the Friends since January 2007.
