William H. (Bill) Smith, the Director of Friends Services,
was born in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, completed his secondary
schooling in British Columbia; attended the University of British Columbia
from 1951 to 1954; and graduated from the Canadian Forces Staff College
in Toronto in 1971.
Before joining the Public Service (Transport Canada) in 1982, Bill served
as a commissioned officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian
Army and the Canadian Armed Forces in a wide variety of operational and
administrative roles in Canada, West Africa (Ghana) and Cyprus. He retired
from the Canadian Armed Forces at the rank of Major in 1982 with over
29 years of service. He has been awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration
with clasp, the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, both the Queen Elizabeth
II Silver and Golden Jubilee Medals and the United Nations Medal for Cyprus.
Although formally retired from both the Public Service and the Canadian
Forces with 41 years of service, he is an active member of the Royal Canadian
Dragoon Association in which he serves as the Membership Director and
Secretary of the Association's National Capital Region Branch.
Bill joined the Friends of the Canadian War Museum in 1996 with a view
to providing volunteer services to the Friends as a means of contributing
further to the activities of the Canadian War Museum. He is presently
the Director of Friends Services with the responsibility of managing the
membership requirements of over 2000 members of the Friends of the Canadian
War Museum.
