Do you know

  • a student who is looking for a volunteer assignment this summer?
  • a student with a strong interest in Canadian military history?
  • a student who would like to collaborate on a research project with a knowledgeable veteran?

The Friends of the Canadian War Museum are repeating last year's successful Student Volunteer project designed to support the War Museum's mandate to educate, commemorate and preserve. Interested high school students are invited to apply for two Summer Student Volunteer positions

The Volunteer assignment:
For six weeks this summer (early July to mid-August), two Summer Student Volunteers will be paired with two of the Friends' Volunteer Interpreters. The students will accompany the Volunteer Interpreters as they meet with the public in the Museu's public galleries and interpret the various artifacts, exhibits or experiences. At the end of the summer each Summer Student Volunteer will develop an essay in consultation with the Volunteer Interpreter based on the students' interests and perhaps at the suggestion of the V.I.s.

Student Volunteers are expected to be punctual, well-groomed, and well-dressed ("business casual") while volunteering at the Canadian War Museum.

The Summer Students will grant permission to the Friends to publish the essay in the Friends' newsletter, web site or other media. Summer Student Volunteers will be receiving a complimentary one-year subscription to The Torch, the newsletter of the Friends of the Canadian War Museum.

Time Requirement:
We anticipate that the Summer Student Volunteers will spend one half-day per week at the Canadian War Museum with the Volunteer Interpreter, plus time to write the essay.

Application Process:
Interested students should send a formal letter to the Coordinator, Ms Phyl Reading by May 31, 2011. The letter should include a description of an aspect of Canadian military history of particular interest to the student and a brief résumé or description of his or her academic interests. A limited number of applicants will be invited to interviews starting on June 13. Applicants will be notified before July 1. The two successful applicants will then be registered as official volunteers with the Canadian War Museum with their normal administration procedures such as ID card, security, insurance etc.
